What is polyurethane (PUR) adhesive?

Polyurethane (PUR) adhesives are a type of strong and flexible adhesive that is widely used in various industries due to their versatility and ability to bond a wide range of materials including metals, fiberglass, foam, laminates, plastics, and wood. There are several types of PUR adhesives, including hot melt, liquid, and 2-part liquid and polyurea.

One of the key features of PUR adhesives is that they form a bond in two stages. Initially, when the adhesive cools and solidifies, it reaches a holding strength known as green strength. Over the next 8-24 hours, a moisture-curing reaction occurs, leading to the final structural bond.

PUR adhesives also have excellent high and low-temperature resistance making them significantly stronger than traditional hot melt adhesives, as they polymerize when they come into contact with moisture in the air, allowing them to form stronger bonds after the curing process is complete. This reaction is called cross-linking.
